Lisbon Flight Information Region might look rectangular would it not cover the Madeira archipelago region. There is however an extension of airspace from the south of Portugal (from Sagres) to this archipelago. LPPC FIR is able to handle all kinds of traffic. From the simple domestic VFR flights between the small aerodromes of Portugal to the IFR domestic flights between the four major Portuguese airports (Porto airport LPPR, Faro airport LPFR, Lisbon airport LPPT and Funchal airport LPMA), as well as international flights in and out of the FIR. The Lisbon FIR is also an in-and-out point for flights using North Atlantic Tracks. As any other FIR there are restricted zones, airways, sectors and local procedures to comply with. The northbound-southbound RVSM system is implemented on this FIR. Hence, flights proceeding to the south between a directional heading of 090 degrees to 269 degrees shall fly on Odd Flight Levels (FL330, FL350), whilst flights proceeding to the north between a directional heading of 270 and 089 shall fly on Even Flight Levels (FL340, FL360). All domestic IFR flights are flown on a north-south axis along the UP600 ATS when flying north above FL245 and along the UN726 when flying south above FL245. These ATS routes are only available to RNAV system equipped aircrafts. Traffic above FL245 with origin/destination Funchal is flown preferably on the UZ13 and UN745 when flying north, and on the UN975 and UZ13 when flying south. Although the FIR prefers utilization of these routes there are also many other designated airways which pilots/airlines may opt to use. Lisbon Flight Information Region staff is ready to receive anyone who wishes to join us. We are free to assist you in any case. Come and fly to/from LPPC FIR!
