The Portuguese airspace is divided in
two separate sections: the Lisbon FIR and the Santa Maria FIR. The Lisbon
FIR (LPPC) has four international airports and more than forty airfields
(military bases and small public airfields). From the furthest North point
of this region to furthest South point, the distance is more than 700nm.
It is almost 380nm wide, and more than 60% of its area is water. The neighbour
FIR’s are: at North and East, Madrid (LECM) and Sevilha (LECS); at South,
Casablanca (GMMM) and Canarias (GCCC); and at West Santa Maria (LPPO).
The Santa Maria FIR (LPPO) is bigger than the Lisbon FIR, almost seven
times, and has nine airports/airfields. It is 900nm wide and 1600nm long,
being 98% of its area Atlantic Ocean. At North have boundaries with Shanwick
(EGGX) and at Northwest with Gander (CZQX), at South with Sal (GVSC) and
Piarco (TTZP), at West with New York (KZNY) and at East with Lisbon (LPPC).
