March
24th of 1946 was a landmark day in Portuguese aviation, Portugal
began an ambitious project of connecting the new and the old continent
once again, but this time by air. It consisted in the first experimental
flight to the south of Africa, this flight had as main objective,
such as the other 3 flights carried later with different routes,
to prepare and choose the definitive route, later known as "Linha
Aérea Imperial" (the Imperial Line), operate by "Transportes
Aéreos Portuguese" today call TAP Portugal.
This flight was made by one of the first Portuguese
Douglas DC-3 (Dakota) with registration (CS-TDC) and was the longest
route ever made by a DC-3 . They flew around 24,600 KM (13.300 NM)
connecting Lisbon to Lourenço Marques (current Maputo) Mozambique,
via Luanda, Angola. And then return to Lisbon using the same route.
This event has as objective to celebrate the fact
and not the conditions present at the time. This event can be made
in any aircraft and in (VFR) or (IFR) , if you prefer you can fly
in the same conditions (VFR) and using the aircraft (DC-3).
After completing this event you will receive a
Division Award. That will be present in your IVAO Profile page.
